James Mitchell returning for AMC anniversary

For more than a year, All My Children fans have wondered why Palmer Cortlandt hasn't been seen on-screen. Certainly Palmer would have reveled in rival Adam's personal troubles. Some feared the worst. Others quietly hoped that somehow actor James Mitchell would find a way to someday pop up on the ABC soap again. Now, fans' wishes are about to be granted.

The list of party-goers wanting to fete All My Children's milestone anniversary keeps getting longer. James Mitchell (Palmer Cortlandt) will return to All My Children next month to help the soap mark its 40th anniversary. He will join former stars Julia Barr, Mark Consuelos, Eva LaRue, Laurence Lau, Taylor Miller, Leven Rambin, Eden Riegel, and Kelly Ripa, who were previously announced as returning for the special two-day event.

It's been more than a year since Mitchell last appeared on All My Children. Palmer was last seen on-screen in September 2008. Since that time, Palmer has been mentioned as being in Europe trying to square away his company's financial trouble.

Unbeknownst to fans, Mitchell quietly retired from acting earlier this year. Among Mitchell's career highlights were roles in the 1947 original Broadway production of Brigadoon and the 1995 silver screen version of Oklahoma!. He has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy on seven different occasions.

Mitchell, who joined the cast of All My Children in 1979, will appear in episodes airing January 4 and 5.
